Victrix Napoleonics - Review

Posted at 05:22 PM on February 14, 2009

So I have a good look at these wee fellas now and here are a few of my observations.  I found that there was quite a lot of flash on some of the figures and after only two figures I was soon fed up with trying to clean them up!

Also there was disappointing lack of detail on some of the figures and a broken sword.

I was impressed with detail on the faces but it was a shame that generally the finer details such as lace, buttons etc was poor.  I peservered and glued a couple together, a rather drawn out process and I am not looking forward to tackling more figures!

Eventually I got round to starting to paint the figures and, as a painter not a gamer, I found them rather dull and uninspiring if I'm honest.

And this is as far as I got before other figures in the pile caught my eye.  These figures are definately lacking in the detail of their metal counterparts.  I have no plans to rush back and finish the ones that I started......but never say never!  I still have vague plans to maybe use them in a Hougoment diorama.

I think plastics will have a major impact on the hobby but I hope the manufacturers avoid the silly "Airfix" type poses. Simple marching or firing line boxes should be enough. German States.....hopefully!

So we all agree about the Perry's v Victrix...when is someone going to do some of the much needed German states!?! Plastics are going to be the future I fear.

I have both Perry and Victrix, and the Perry's are a bit cleaner, but I've run into the same problem. After assembling a few, I'm done for the nite. Filing flash just isn't my idea of an enjoyable hobby night. Another problem I've run into with the plastics is that filing often scratches the plastic, sometimes badly, leaving gouge markes and scrapes. I thought I had a good set of fine hobby files, but maybe I need better ones if I'm going to keep working on these.

I have seen the Perry figs and they do look a bit cleaner and with more detail. I am tempted to maybe try some of the cavalry when they come out .

Have you tried the Perry plastic Napoleonics? If not, do you have plans to do so? From afar they appear to have less flash -- but I've never held a sprue of them in my own hands, so who knows.
